Heterosis in Ddt Resistant and Susceptible Populations

چکیده

HE phenomenon of heterosis has generally been studied in relation to some Tarbitrarily selected trait such as size, weight, or yield. Heterosis is then regarded as being manifested by an increase in the chosen trait. Although various definitions have been proposed ( GOWEN 1952), heterosis is most commonly and most meaningfully defined as an increase in the chosen trait in crossbred individuals as compared to the better of their more inbred parents. While heterosis is usually considered to affect all of the characters of hybrids, it is actually only measured in relation to the trait or traits selected for study. Recently DOBZHANSKY (in GOWEN 1952) has equated heterosis with adaptive value and has called increased size or vigor “luxuriance” when it does not contribute to fitness, This usage, while it has the advantage of referring always to the same trait, adaptive value, may lead to considerable confusion since it is entirely possible for smaller size, for example, to confer greater adaptive value than large, and hence a direct contradiction between the historical meaning of the word (SHULL 1948) and this new definition will result. The experiments to be reported were designed to test some of the concepts which have grown up around the phenomenon of heterosis.

Determination of Glutathione S-Transferase e2 Region (GSTe2) in DDT Susceptible and Resistant Anopheles stephensi Populations: Significance and Application of Nucleotide and Amino Acid Comparison

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a major family of detoxification enzymes which possess a wide range of substrate specificities. Interest in insect GSTs has primarily focused on their role in insecticide resistance. In this study, following World Health Organization (WHO) routine susceptibility test, DNA was extracted from specimens of Anopheles stephensi collected from the Kazeroon distri...

Resistance to DDT in an Urban Setting: Common Mechanisms Implicated in Both M and S Forms of Anopheles gambiae in the City of Yaoundé Cameroon

BACKGROUND In the city of Yaoundé in Cameroon malaria is predominately transmitted by the M and S molecular forms of Anopheles gambiae and both are resistant to the pyrethroid insecticides and DDT. Mutations in the target site of these insecticides, present at a high frequency in malaria vectors in this city, contribute to this resistance profile. To identify additional resistance mechanisms, t...

Cross-resistance and synergism bioassays suggest multiple mechanisms of pyrethroid resistance in western corn rootworm populations

Recently, resistance to the pyrethroid bifenthrin was detected and confirmed in field populations of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte from southwestern areas of Nebraska and Kansas. As a first step to understand potential mechanisms of resistance, the objectives of this study were i) to assess adult mortality at diagnostic concentration-LC99 to the pyrethroids bifen...

Salt and water stress of ACCase herbicides resistant and susceptible populations of rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum)

Laboratory studies were conducted to compare the relative fitness of clodinafop-propargyl herbicide resistant Lolium rigidum accessions with their clodinafop-propargyl susceptible counterparts in 2014. Factors evaluated were Lolium populations at constant salinity stress (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 dS cm2) and water stress (0, -3, -6, -9, -12 and -15 bar). The maximum germination in salinity stres...
